S-band gain calibrators

S-band gain calibrators

MeerKAT S-band gain calibrators are chosen from a several of sources and further selections are made based on the criteria below

  • Sources are excluded due to evidence of extended structure.

    • A source must not have a resolved fraction,

      , that is significantly larger than unity.

  • Calibrators for MeerKAT S band have been chosen to have:

    • S-band flux densities above 0.5 Jy to ensure high signal-to-noise (S/N)  ratio

      • Stokes I signal-to-noise ratio must be at least 10

    • to be a point-like source and not have significant flux in the field

      • All secondary sources in the field must not be brighter than 10% of the peak flux of the field target source.

    • have closure phases less than 2° 

The sources in Table 1 from the MeerKAT L-band list, were observed at the S4 sub-band (2625 MHz to 3500 MHz). Each of the sources were observed with several 7.5-minute scans scattered over a period of a few hours. The selection analysis is documented in the draft report MeerKAT S-band calibrators candidates extension report - Rev A. The sources in Table 2 which are the MeerKAT S-band gain calibrators were chosen from the ATCA and VLA calibrator lists and were observed in the S3 sub-band (2406 MHz to 3281 MHz).
